Amtrak Train vs. Pedestrian Collision in Carlsbad

On May 30th, 2019, at approximately 0800 hours, deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to an Amtrak Train vs. pedestrian collision. The collision occurred on the railroad tracks, at the pedestrian crosswalk near the 400 block of Carlsbad Village Drive, in the city of Carlsbad.
A northbound Amtrak Train was traveling at approximately 80 miles per hour when the engineer observed a white male adult, between the ages of 25-35 years old, standing at the Carlsbad Village Drive pedestrian crossing. The male was observed standing within the crossing arm guards. The train sounded its warning horn to alert the male, but the male jumped in front of the train, unfortunately fatally striking him. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.
