Oceanside Police to Hold DUI Checkpoint – August 11, 2023

0

Oceanside, Calif. – The Oceanside Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on August 11, 2023, from 7 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location within Oceanside city limits.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of a DUI checkpoint is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Clint Bussey said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Oceanside Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic
Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Vista Hotel Site Now to be Park Land Development

0

The City Council voted 5-0 to purchase the property located at 536 Matagual Dr/Rd on the corner of Hacienda and Matagual. This property is over 2.5 acres adjacent to the new Sunroad development which brought a “Chic-fil-A, Panera, Starbucks and Habit Burger drive-through to the City of Vista. The property has come before the council multiple times and the Matagual community was very involved in letting the council know they wanted a park as opposed to a hotel, or medium high density housing. The property was listed for 3.8 Million dollars and had been under contract multiple times. Hilton House2Home Suites worked with former Economic Development Director Kevin Ham to bring a hotel to that site. A housing development or hotel would require a General Plan Change which is why the council was able to deny their plans.

The Shadle family are long time Vistans who own the property Sunroad purchased as well as this property on Matagual. They agreed to sell it to the City of Vista at a discounted price of 2.1 M with the stipulation that a parkland deed rider be recorded with the sale. This deed inclusion specified that this parcel must remain parkland on perpetuity for 50 years. The citizens that attended the council meeting where the item was officially approved were very excited with the councils decision. The Vista city council has made the purchase of parklands, and preservation of green spaces a priority. They were presented all available lots for sale by city staff in 2022 and all seemed overpriced and impractical. Councilmember Green said, “When Councilmember O’Donnell brought me in on his desire to bring this forward as a park for our community, I was in full support. The Shadle family was kind enough to sit down and discuss our plans, and saw the benefit to the city, of designating this parcel as park land. It has been years since the city has purchased new park land and I am so excited we have a council that has prioritized this and is taking action.”

Councilmember Dan O’Donnell spoke with a gentleman named Nadav, who told him he had purchased his forever home here in Vista for his wife and their young children. He shared his concerns over infrastructure in the neighborhood, community safety, and how he had to drive to Carlsbad or San Marcos to take his kids to a park. “That conversation resonated with me,” Dan said. In March, Councilmember Green and O’Donnell met with Julian Shadle and had a conversation about how we would like to activate that space. It was during that conversation that Julian has mentioned how his father always said it would be a great place for a park and that they would be open to discussions with the city to sell the property, so long as it would be a park forever. The rest is history. This is a huge win for District 4 and for all of Vista!

The sale is expected to close by the end of August and the city plans to include the property in their park master plan study currently underway. The park was purchased from the cities park land purchase budget which are funds that are solely allocated for park land purchases and improvements. There will be several community meetings to determine the highest and best use for this site.

Moonlight Amphitheater – Disney’s ‘Tarzan The Musical’

The "Tarzan The Musical" cast.

VISTA, CA– Moonlight Amphitheater’s 2023 ‘Disney’s Tarzan The Musical’, is a fun and heartfelt production with a passionate, diverse cast of performers. Locally paying tribute to the classic story with interactive aspects such as bird callings within the audience the PG musical on its third week of showings is exciting for all ages. The impressive young Tarzan and the actors behind Terk, Kala, Kerchak, Tarzan, and Jane actively work together on stage to wildly swing, fly, and jump during the performance. This nostalgic Moonlight summer production is visually, audibly, and emotionally magical.

Watching either from the grass or more immersive amphitheater seating, the stage structures and colorful changing lights focus on the work of the performers. With an almost full show each night, the movements of the ensemble cast, dedicated to moving like apes, and the somewhat seamless combination of actors singing, acting, and swinging from a rope audibly excites young audiences. The accompanying music composed by Phil Collins is played by Moonlight Amphitheater’s orchestra located below the stage and closest to the audience. They produce each powerful song, to every small yet essential sound effect in the musical.

Moonlight’s Tarzan’s vibrant colors within lighting and set design were especially prevalent within the scene of Janes first appearance where the ensemble acted as live plants and parts of nature. Opening with a flying performer depicted as a butterfly, each scene is almost entirely unique from the next. A whole set design is torn down in one, where plates and props are thrown by the family of apes. With the attention to detail combined with memorable musical numbers, “You’ll Be In My Heart,” “Strangers Like Me,” and “Two Worlds,” Tarzan’s world is achieved.

The diverse cast ranges from 12 years old to 40. All of the actors voices wonderfully combine to tell the story. Jad Marrewa, the youngest of the cast from the San Diego Performing Arts Directory delivers multiple impressive songs and scenes as “Young Tarzan.” Moonlight’s “Terk,” Jacob Haren, a principal vocalist, is a previous Broadway performer and honored for making LGBTQ+ Disney Channel history. Patrica Jewel who is returning to Moonlight for Tarzan, plays “Kala with a wonderful vocal contribution that is beautifully witnessed live. Margie Mays, familiar with BroadwayWorld LA as “Jane Porter” perfectly captures the character while she’s accompanied by Nathaniel Dolquist, “Tarzan” and Yale alumni who trained with rugby and olympic coaches. Dolquist trained aerial straps with Cirque du Soleil aerialists, and learned animal locomotion and it is evident!

Kayla Quiroz, a lifetime performer and recent UCI Musical Theatre graduate–rushing on her graduation day to the first rehearsal expressed her excitement for the entire process that makes up Moonlight’s Tarzan.

Able to answer a few questions from the North County Daily Star before August 2nd’s showing at the amphitheater, Kayla described the musical in one word as: ‘Eclectic’. Her past work in comedy fairs and performing for a Shakespeare festival, prepared the Long Beach local for her first-time professional musical gig at Moonlight. Quiroz notes the ‘controlled chaos’ of the production and how her ensemble family comes together to tell the story.

Nostalgic of the story herself, Kayla Quiroz explained the experience of not only watching, but performing Tarzan. Themes of identity and family, and multiple points within the performance reflect the message of chosen family. The time the actors spent rehearsing over the summer of 2023 mirrors that of every summer spent at Moonlight Amphitheatre beginning in 1980 during its opening. The countless theater families that have grown here since are what makes each opening night special for both audiences and performers.

Moonlight Amphitheater’s production of “Disney’s Tarzan the Musical” is an exciting and emotional summer performance you don’t want to miss. The showings end this coming Saturday night after three weeks of performances: Disney’s Tarzan The Musical | Moonlight Stage Productions Live local theater is a fun family event and supports passionate communities!

The Escondido Fire Department recently received the following letter: “We are pleased to inform you that the Escondido Fire Department has been selected by Congressman Darrell Issa to receive a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in recognition of their exceptional and honorable service to the community.”

On June 24, The City of Escondido Fire Department was presented with the flag from Representatives of Congressman Darrel Issa’s office, outside of Police & Fire Headquarters. Escondido City Council Members, City management and the Police Department Command attended the presentation. This was a great honor for the City of Escondido Fire Department.

The weather and fire behavior in Riverside County accelerated the Bonny Fire incident originating near the Cahuilla Indian Reservation and the Aguanga area. On the morning of July 28, CAL FIRE reported that 2069 acres had burned with very little containment.

Therefore, OES Type 3 Strike Team, 6848 Charlie was deployed to the fire to assist. Escondido Fire’s representation for these resources include Chief Matthews and Chief Salazar, deployed as the Strike Team leader/Trainee, and Captain Steve Nugent, Engineer Geoff McClellan, Firefighter/Paramedics Eric Roberts, and Nick Sharp, deployed as the assigned crew for Brush Engine 8334. All arrived safely to the Bonny fire, and we wish them a safe return very soon.

Some of the kids were so excited they got to the game 90 minutes early. For most of the kids it was their first pro baseball game. To make it extra special for the kids, PAL managed to get field level tickets and treated the kids to lunch. A great time was had by all.
