0

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, at approximately 1:54 am, the Oceanside Police Department responded to calls of a single-vehicle collision west of State Route 76 and Airport Road. The crash occurred when a 2003 Nissan Maxima traveling eastbound on SR-76 lost control. The vehicle collided with a large tree on the south shoulder of the roadway. Officers and paramedics arrived to find that the car’s rear passenger, a Hispanic male approximately thirty years old, had sustained fatal injuries due to the collision. The driver and front seat passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and it is suspected that alcohol and speed were a factor in the collision. The driver, twenty-nine-year-old Guillermo Sanchez Pacheco of Oceanside, was arrested for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter. The deceased’s name is withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

VISTA, Calif. – Rancho Buena Vista High School is extremely pleased and proud to announce that our drama department competed this past weekend and won for their musical “Singin’ in the Rain.” They were one of three finalists for musicals in San Diego County schools in the 10th Annual Broadway San Diego Award. They competed against Canyon Crest Academy for RENT: School Edition, Cathedral Catholic High School Amélie: Teen Edition, and schools from around San Diego County.

Three of Rancho Buena Vista’s students were nominated as part of the Top 20 performers in San Diego, and one of our Stage Managers helped run the production. Students spend a week after school in San Diego preparing for this competition. The Top 20 rehearsed two songs, one from the nominated production, and an ensemble opener and closing performance. In addition, students get the chance to perform at the prestigious Balboa Theatre for the opportunity to compete in New York City.
RBV’s senior Ezra Oshima won the best dancer award.

Mackenzie Scott shared, “I remember competing on that stage when I attended RBV and know that this is a first for us to win best musical in San Diego County.” Mackenzie follows in the footsteps of her father, now retired RBV Drama Teacher, to ensure his legacy continues. This past week our RBV cast and crew joined dozens of other finalists across the county for a week-long experience that includes rehearsals, workshops, lectures, field trips, and one-on-one coaching sessions, designed to prepare the students for The Jimmy Awards -presented on Broadway at a Nederlander Theatre.

As some of our cast and crew prepare for graduation on June 7, 2023, we wanted to recognize their efforts in making history at The Ranch.

Public Welcome Hop Highway Brew Off Sunday

0

Your Vista Firefighters are excited to announce our 6th Annual Hop highway Fundraiser on Sunday June 4th from 5-9 pm!! Once again we will be partnering with Belching Beaver Pub 980, located at 980 Park Center Drive, in Vista, Ca. This is a fundraising, firefighter home brew competition, with the first-place team taking home the coveted first place fire helmet trophy!
This year your Vista Firefighters will be honoring two recipients at the Hop Highway Brew Off- Chula Vista Fire Captain Dangkhoa “DQ” Nguyen, and City of Goodyear Engineer/Paramedic Gilbert Aguirre.
On March 31, 2023, Chula vista Fire Department Captain Dangkhoa “DQ” Nguyen’s life was forever changed when he was diagnosed with occupational Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Captain Nguyens giving nature and servants heart may have saved his life. His last platelet donation in March led to the early detection of his leukemia. Ngyuen was at the Red Cross Blood Donation Center in Kearny Mesa to donate his platelets- something he had been doing one or two times a month – for over 20 years. The staff at Red Cross detected an anomaly in his blood and recommended he see his doctor. Ngyuen was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with leukemia two days later. Captain Nguyen’s treatment has involved chemotherapy for the last month, and he will receive outpatient treatment for an additional five months.
Gilbert Aguirre is an Engineer/Paramedic with the City of Goodyear in Arizona. His story goes far beyond the trauma of his diagnosis and fight to survive cancer.
Gilbert has been in the fire service for over 20 years as a member of United Goodyear Firefighters L4005 and is a true public servant. He has been married to his beautiful wife Tiffanie for just as long, and they have three amazing boys.

In May of 2015, Fire Engineer Aguirre was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)- a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow, then invades the blood. Aguirre was just 35 years old at the time.
Unfortunately, in 2015 his CML was not immediately considered a work-related illness. Although his cancer (Leukemia) is on the original presumptive cancer bill for work-related cancer, and although he met every criterion, his claim was denied by his City’s workers compensation company.
Ironically, there have been substantive changes to Arizona’s cancer presumption laws for firefighters- in part because Gilbert has spent years lobbying and testifying to protect his fellow firefighters-yet the courts continue to deny his work-related claim. A 2021 change in state law makes it easier for firefighters to get workers compensation for cancer- they no longer must prove that the cancer was caused by work related toxins. But the bill does not contain a retroactivity clause.
The denials of coverage have forced Gilbert and his family to declare bankruptcy. His prescriptions for chemotherapy- which are keeping him alive- cost 15,000 dollars a month. “The cost of that medication is steep. I’ll try to keep working, I guess, until my body can’t hold up anymore” Aguirre said.
Tickets for the event are available for purchase at vistafirefighters.com. We are always happy to receive donations from our community partners. Measure X revenue allowed the development of the Fire Department’s EMT program. Seven ambulances are now staffed 24-hours a day citywide to respond to emergency medical calls. Oceanside EMTs are mentored and provided the flexibility to attend Fire Academy and Paramedic School. A proposal to increase EMT pay and include stipends for education and further training is included in the next fiscal year budget, which is expected to be discussed at the next City Council meeting on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.
