Haley Smith of Belching Beaver Brewery Appointed President of San Diego Brewers Guild Board

0

San Diego, Calif. – San Diego Brewers Guild, a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization that promotes local small businesses and entrepreneurs of craft beer, this week appointed Haley Smith of Oceanside’s Belching Beaver Brewery as President of its Board of Directors for the 2023 calendar year. Executive Director Paige McWey Acers made the announcement.

Smith assumes the role of President after last year serving as Vice President and Secretary. She first joined the Board in 2020 as a Director. The Point Loma native, who has worked at Belching Beaver since 2016 and is currently its Director of Marketing, replaces Coronado Brewing’s Rick Chapman at the top position.

“Haley is a superstar within the industry and I am excited to see her lead a talented group of board members, representing all member breweries in America’s Finest City and The Capital of Craft ™,” McWey Acers said. “There is certainly no shortage of beer knowledge on our 2023 Board.”

“The craft beer industry is still recovering from the pandemic and there is a lot of work to do,” Smith said. “But I embrace the challenge, look forward to helping all our member breweries, and make sure one of the nationwide beer spotlights remains on San Diego.”

The complete 2023 Board of Directors:

President – Haley Smith, Belching Beaver Brewery
President Emeritus – Rick Chapman, Coronado Brewing Co.

Vice President – Jake Nunes, Burgeon Beer Company
Treasurer – Bryan Carpenter, LevitZacks CPA
Secretary – Chris Leguizamon, Pure Project
Director – Erik Fowler, White Labs Brewing Co.
Director – Tim Parker, Chula Vista Brewery
Director – Marc Martin, Thorn Brewing Co.
Director – John McMullen, Resident Brewing Co.

The Brewers Guild also announced most of its events for the year. They include:

2nd-Annual SD Beer Weekend – June 9-11

45th-Annual Homebrew Con – June 22-24

*Produced by American Homebrewers Association

San Diego Craft Beer Con – August date TBD

9th-Annual Brewers Guild Golf Tournament – September 7

15th-Annual San Diego Beer Week – November 3-12

The Brewers Guild also sponsors a Tap Into Knowledge educational series throughout the year, and the first event on January 25 is “New Year, New Laws” to discuss how the State of California’s new laws affect breweries as employers, as well as changes to Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) laws.

Individual brewery events for throughout the year are posted on the Brewers Guild’s calendar.

San Diego County is known as The Capital of Craft™, a moniker that was trademarked in 2015. San Diego has the most craft brewery locations among all counties in the United States with more than 150. The Brewers Guild, which is celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, was founded in 1997 with 15 breweries.

It’s been a wet start to 2023 here in Carlsbad with some reports of damage, but thankfully we have not been hit nearly as hard as other parts of the state. I’d like to give a big shout out to our city crews who have been out keeping our roads and storm drains clear and to our Fire Department for their quick response to people in need during the recent storms.

More rain is on the way this weekend, so please continue to take precautions, especially on our roads. Today I’ll be sharing some information about road safety as well as these updates:

Appointment process for District 2 City Council vacancy
A new roadmap for economic growth
Sustainability by the numbers
Housing Commission to discuss homeless response plan
Grant funding for community organizations
See something that needs fixing? Try the CarlsbadConnects app
An update on I-5 construction
Plan for road closures during the Carlsbad Marathon

Escondido Police Department Updates

Hit and Run Traffic Collision

A semi-truck struck a City fire hydrant last week, quickly causing the street to flood. A good citizen saw the accident occur and followed the truck. Officers were able to arrest the driver for hit and run. Escondido Fire Department was able to shut off the water and public works repaired the hydrant. Another example of the great teamwork of City employees.

Congratulations

The Escondido Police Department is pleased to welcome Isamara Aispura to the team. Isamara was sworn in as a Public Safety Dispatcher this week and is currently in training.

About Las Valientes
Las Valientes is a group of men and women who have chosen to break the chains and cycle of domestic violence so common in our community. In our 17 years we have been dedicated to assisting men and women of all nationalities but especially immigrant Hispanic women in our community who are victims of domestic violence and/or any form of abuse in their home, and to support them as they make decisions to stop or escape the violence.

We seek to work with victims and enable them to escape the violence and abuse in their homes by providing legal advocacy, court accompaniment and resources in the community to meet their many needs and that of their children as they make decisions to end the cycle of violence in their lives. We help them understand the legal system, we hold their hand, interpret for them, and stand by their side through the legal process, whether it is a Restraining Order, a Family Law Matter or a Juvenile Court case, we are there to help them through that process.

The Vallecitos Water District will honor its history when it moves a vintage service vehicle with a significant story to tell into its lobby this month.

The District’s General Manager Glenn Pruim approved moving the 1946 “Willys” CJ2A Jeep into the lobby of its headquarters building as a museum display, with informational signage and photos depicting its activities.

The 1946 Jeep served the water district for decades. It was used to survey property. When this task was no longer feasible, the Jeep became a favorite public outreach tool, appearing in parades and public events in the Vallecitos service area. It made its final appearance at the 2010 San Marcos Christmas Parade, driven by Vallecitos Board Member Margaret E. “Betty” Ferguson, who had an affinity for the Jeep after serving in the Women’s U.S. Marine Corps.

In addition to her 35 years of dedicated service to the Vallecitos Water District on its board of directors, Ferguson was the first City Clerk for the City of San Marcos. She was the planning commission secretary and city manager pro tem from 1963 to 1971. Throughout her career, Ferguson served on many city, county, and state boards, task forces, and commissions.

Vallecitos Public Information Representative Lisa Urabe said Ferguson repeatedly demonstrated her ability to work with other board members, customers, and District employees. “Betty was more than just a Vallecitos board member,” said Urabe.

In 2013, the Vallecitos Water District adopted a resolution honoring Betty’s contribution, diligent efforts, and selfless service to the District.
