Shooting Arrest – Encinitas

0

A man is under arrest in connection with a shooting that wounded two people in Encinitas.

It happened on Thursday, October 13 around 8:00 a.m. at the Ironsmith Coffee Roasters in the 400 block of South Coast Highway 101.

A man was asked to leave the coffee shop after causing a disturbance. A verbal argument followed in the back alley of the business then turned into a fight. During the altercation, the coffee shop owner produced a gun.

The gun went off once during the struggle. The bullet grazed the coffee shop owner at the back of his neck. A bystander was also hit in the leg with shrapnel.

The suspect took hold of the gun so the owner ran to the Encinitas Fire Station in the 400 block of Second Street for help. Firefighters encountered the suspect with the gun and detained him.

Jmar Tarafa (DOB 12/15/1990) is being booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a firearm in a threatening manner.

At this time, the coffee shop owner is not facing any charges. The investigation is ongoing.

Oceanside Students Recognized as Rising Stars by Local Community

0

OCEANSIDE, Calif.: Congratulations to October’s Rising Stars:
Thomas Carramusa from Surfside Educational Academy
Elizabeth Danielson from Oceanside High School
Alejandra Santos from El Camino High School

These 12th grade students will be honored for rising above their circumstances Tuesday, Oct. 18th, from 8-9:30 a.m. when the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosts its Rising Star Student of the Month program for the 2022-23 school year. The event will be at the William A. Wagner Aquatic Center, 3306 Senior Center Drive, Oceanside.

The program, in its second year, aims to champion students who have overcome significant challenges in their lives, but have managed to keep, or get back on track with their education. The Chamber honors a high school senior from each of our area high schools at the monthly breakfast events.

Each school principal collaborates with his or her staff to nominate one 12th grader per month. The students must be college or vocational school-bound and they should emulate the program’s mission statement: “Convening the business and education community to honor Oceanside seniors for rising above adversity by demonstrating character, integrity, school and community engagement that make our city shine like a star.” Honorees are then eligible to apply for higher education scholarships that will be awarded at the end of the school year. While scholarships may be awarded for a wide variety of fields of study, the Chamber and its Workforce Development Task Force will be asked to keep in mind the emerging industries in the region including technology, biotech/life sciences, and advanced manufacturing.

During the event, the school principals and the student’s parents and mentoring teachers will share what sets this student apart from other students and provide examples of their character, integrity, passion, focus and perseverance that has made them such a Rising Star on their campus and in our community. Oceanside’s Mayor Esther Sanchez is set to speak and she will provide commendations to each Rising Star along with elected officials Supervisor Jim Desmond, Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, Senator Pat Bates and Congressman Mike Levin.

Scott Ashton, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, said they are hosting the Rising Star program as part of its larger workforce development initiative. “The primary objectives are student recognition, scholarships for higher education and building of relationships between the business community and K-12 educational system. We are focused on engaging with our educational partners to ensure a strong workforce pipeline for Oceanside businesses,” Ashton said.

At the end of the school year, our goal is to give scholarships to several students from each of our participating high schools to assist in funding a post-secondary education of the student’s choice. Last year, due to the generosity of our scholarship sponsors Genentech and Tri-City Medical Center, the Oceanside Chamber foundation was able to provide 11 deserving Rising Star students a total of $26,000 in scholarships. For our second cohort of Rising Stars, we are proud to announce that Genentech and Tri-City Medical Center have once, again, matched their support of the scholarship program. They are our Presenting Sponsors and are joined by additional Scholarship Sponsors, P.E.O. International and UEI College. Thank you to these sponsors as well as our Venue Sponsor, City of Oceanside; Food Sponsors, North County Roastery and Frontwave Credit Union; Gold Sponsors MiraCosta College and California Coast Credit Union; Silver Sponsors Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, Wells Fargo, SDG&E and Grand Canyon University. Many thanks to One Kitchen Collaborative, Sizzler, and Handel’s Ice Cream.

Each Rising Star is also eligible for mentoring and leadership training to help them prepare for higher education and the workplace with services provided by Chamber members from the business, higher education, healthcare, public service, and other sectors. Rising Star events are open to all community members who want to show their support for our students. Tickets are $25 for Chamber members and $40 for prospective members. Register for the breakfasts, scholarships, and mentorships at www.risingstaroceanside.

Escondido ‘FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES’

0

On October 6, the engine and ladder truck crews from Fire Station #1 assisted San Diego Fire and Rescue Department with locating, treating and transporting an injured hiker in the area near Lake Hodges. Firefighters found an adult male experiencing medical problems that required immediate transportation to a hospital. The San Diego Fire and Rescue Departments helicopter was utilized to transport the patient from a remote location directly to Palomar Hospital. The patient’s dog, who was with him on in the hike, was also located and cared for by firefighters until family arrived to retrieve him.

Escondido Fire Captain Matt Collins, who is assigned a leader of the North County Rapid Extraction Module (REMS) team, is providing rescue and medic service for personnel still working at the Mosquito Fire in Placer and El Dorado Counties. The terrain is rugged, remote and inaccessible by vehicles or helicopters. In the event of an injury, the REMS team is able to bring advance life support care to the location as well as technical recue so the victim can be brought to a hospital.

TrueCare’s Dr. Jorge Otañez and Moises Moreida Named Top 50 Latino Leaders of Influence

0

San Marcos, Calif., October 12, 2022 — TrueCare’s Dr. Jorge Otañez and Moises Moreida have been honored as Top 50 Latino Leaders of Influence for 2022 by the San Diego Business Journal and San Diego County & Imperial County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The judges recognized Dr. Otañez and Moises for their dedication to creating a healthier and more resilient Hispanic community.

Dr. Otañez plays a vital role as Associate Chief Medical Officer for TrueCare, bringing more than a decade of experience to the healthcare center. In this high-profile position, he provides clinical oversight on the delivery of healthcare, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of wellness services and programs. Dr. Otañez chose a career in healthcare after growing up in Tijuana and witnessing firsthand the devastation that medical disparities can have on Latino individuals and families.

Among his recent achievements with improving healthcare for Hispanics are:

Fighting the COVID-19 Infodemic by providing education, creating educational curriculum in Spanish and increasing the access to high quality care for patients, especially the Hispanic population.

Starting a diabetes program for the general Hispanic population to control diabetes.

Promoting the use of telehealth to help the Hispanic population get better access to healthcare.

Moises Moreida’s passion for underserved Hispanics began in college when he conducted public health surveys. There, he witnessed firsthand the often poor working conditions and lack of quality healthcare for this disadvantaged population. This experience inspired him to become a public health professional.

Moises is now the new Public Health Project and Planning Manager for TrueCare, his employer since 2015.

As a passionate, visionary leader for the Latino community, Moises focuses his time to build and strengthen strategic relationships within the North San Diego County and South Riverside communities, overseeing a variety of outreach activities, especially with Hispanics and other minority groups.

Moises has helped improved healthcare for Hispanics and underserved communities over the past year by:

Spearheading TrueCare’s partnership with the non-profit group, Feeding San Diego, to provide 500,000 pounds of food in one year to the underserved community, especially Hispanics.

Driving various health and food insecurity programs

Securing COVID and flu vaccines for the agricultural population

Speaking on health education averaging 200 speeches in the past year

Expanding TrueCare’s Ag Grab Bags initiative by more than 50 percent

Negotiating expanded agricultural industry participation to feed more Hispanics

Dr. Otañez and Moises remain focused on TrueCare’s mission to make quality, affordable, and accessible care available to everyone in the community and combat inequities that exist not only in healthcare, but in other critical areas of life.

About TrueCare

For 50 years, TrueCare has not wavered in its commitment to patients, their families, and its communities. As a non-profit community health center, TrueCare is dedicated to delivering a superior and compassionate healthcare experience to nearly 60,000 patients every year, reducing barriers and increasing accessibility to quality care. TrueCare cares for diverse communities in North San Diego and South Riverside counties, providing primary care, pediatric, women’s health, behavioral health, chiropractic and dental services. In addition, TrueCare offers transportation services, community health outreach, insurance enrollment assistance and case management programs.
