SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos Volleyball team was recognized this evening by the San Marcos City Council for the Cougars’ recent success on their Italian Tour. The Cougars were the first CSUSM program in the NCAA Division II era to travel abroad for competition and for their overall accomplishments as the only NCAA DII program in North County.

The city council meeting began with a call to order, pledge and invocation. Shortly after, City Council began the presentation on CSUSM Volleyball. A team that was the first program to travel overseas in the NCAA DII era, went undefeated in international competition and has established itself as a top competitor in the California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) conference. Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo joined the team in accepting the commendation from the City Council and proceeded to say a few words, along with Head Coach Andrea Leonard.

Quote from Milo: “I am so incredibly proud of how the CSUSM volleyball student-athletes and coaches represented the City of San Marcos and our University abroad,” said Milo. “This trip was transformational for our volleyball team both on and off the court. I am blessed to have accompanied this special team at this incredibly special time in our department’s growth and success. Thank you to the great city of San Marcos for honoring us today.”

Quote from Leonard: “We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel abroad, compete and represent our community,” said Leonard. “This dream became a reality with the help and support of our San Marcos community and University. The impact will be felt for a lifetime and we are honored to be recognized by our incredible city!”

An evening that was truly memorable and will go down in history for the CSUSM Department of Athletics and the team. The CSUSM Volleyball action begins on August 23-25 at the annual Cougar Classic held at the Sports Center. For tickets and information, visit CSUSMCougars.com.
