Cougars Sweep Doubleheader to Win Series Against CSUDH

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A doubleheader sweep by the Cal State San Marcos baseball team earned it another California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series win as the Cougars defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills by scores of 7-2 and 9-5 on Sunday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

GAME 1: CSUSM 7 – CSUDH 2

HOW IT HAPPENED •The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI double by Ott and an RBI ground out by Joseph Bahna.
•Cowell’s sacrifice fly into left field scored Tanoue and put CSUSM up 3-0 in the bottom of the second.
•A two-run homer to right by CSUDH’s Joe Canepa cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth.
•CSUSM posted its second two-run inning of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Cowell hit an RBI double down the right field line before Ott scored Cowell with an RBI single through the left side.
•Tanoue hit a sacrifice fly into center field to bring home Andrew Garcia and increase the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning.
•The Cougars’ final run of the game came on an RBI single into left field by Ott as Van Til scored in the sixth.
•Reliever Troy Lamparello allowed nothing in 1.2 innings of work while striking out two with 14 pitches.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM improved to 9-4 (5-2 CCAA) while CSUDH dropped to 2-6 (1-6 CCAA).
•Bachman (1-0) earned the win for the Cougars as he threw seven innings, struck out four and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while throwing 100 pitches.
•CSUDH’s Kodi Koorndyke (0-2) took the loss after he allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED •After two scoreless innings, the Toros took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third with four runs on four hits.
•Dylan Wannamaker came on in relief and allowed just one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
•The Cougars earned one back in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single through the left side by Buck.
•A Pierson Loska RBI single put CSUDH up 5-1 in the top of the fourth.
•CSUSM’s clutch hitting came into play in the bottom half of the inning as it exploded for eight runs on five hits and a CSUDH error.
•After Joseph Bahna drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5, Garcia delivered the biggest hit of the game with a three-RBI triple to put CSUSM over the top.
•The Cougars led 9-5 once Garcia scored on a passed ball.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM improved to 10-4 (6-2 CCAA) while CSUDH dropped to 2-7 (1-7 CCAA).
•Reliever Garrett Apker (1-0) earned the win for the Cougars as he threw four innings with three strikeouts while allowing one run on four hits.
•Connor Dreyer (0-1) took the loss for the Toros as he allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning.
•The last time CSUSM started a season at 10-4 was in 2017.
•At 6-2 in CCAA play, CSUSM is off to its best conference start since joining the league in 2016.
