Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood Resigns

Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood announced Wednesday, December 13, 2017, that he was resigning his post effective January 1, 2018. He has been absent from City Council meetings for most of 2017. He suffered a stroke on May 16, 2017 and he has not recovered fully. The city clerk has received his resignation.

Wood attended the city council meeting last week, the first time since May, even though he needed help to perform his duties. The City Manager assisted him with casting his vote. Deputy Mayor Chuck Lowery has been serving as acting mayor since May.

Councilman Jerry Kern said, “He wanted to come back. I understand how he is feeling.” After struggling through the meeting, he decided that he should probably resign.

State law specifies that the council has 60 days after receiving the resignation to appoint someone or schedule an election. The council has until February 7th to place the vacancy on the June ballot.
