Offensive Explosion Powers Cougars to 14-8 Victory

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – An offensive explosion powered the Cal State San Marcos baseball team to a 14-8 victory in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series opener against Stanislaus State on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED •Stan State got on the board first with an RBI single to center by Alexis Paz in the top of the first.
•The Warriors pushed across two runs on a single and sacrifice bunt in the third before Jack Large hit an RBI double down the right field line to put Stan State up 4-0 in the fourth.
•After Ott hit an RBI double to score Buck in the bottom of the third, Garcia rounded out the inning with a two-run jack to left and cut the deficit to 4-3.
•CSUSM took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI triple by Van Til, Buck’s RBI single and an RBI double by Ott.
•The Warriors once again went ahead, 7-6, in the top of the fifth on two RBI singles by Matt Elser and Braeden Oki before Brandon De La Guardia tallied an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
•The game was knotted at 7-all in the bottom of the fifth as a passed ball scored Danny Johnson from third.
•Stan State took its final lead in the top of the sixth with a solo shot by Grant Bunker.
•The Cougars broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Ott, a three RBI triple by Diggs and a Teisher’s sacrifice fly to right.
•Up 13-8 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Teisher concluded the scoring with an RBI single that scored Zach Schuberg.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM improved to 14-17 (10-15 CCAA) while the Warriors dropped to 17-12 (13-10 CCAA).
•This was CSUSM’s second consecutive victory over Stan State dating back to last season and it gave the Cougars a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series.
•Cougar reliever Jared Dinisi (1-0) took the win as he threw 1.1 innings while striking out one and allowing one run on one hit.
•Nathan Gutierrez took the loss for the Warriors as he allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch in 1.1 innings of work.
•The Cougars were 19-for-41 at the plate.
•Ott moved to fourth all-time for total bases in program history with 305 while improving to sixth for runs scored at 123.
