Baseball will head to Chico State for a four-game series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Softball returns home to San Marcos while baseball hits the road this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.

Softball will welcome Sonoma State for a pair of doubleheader at CSUSM Softball Field. Friday’s doubleheader will get underway at 1 p.m. while Saturday’s twin bill will begin at 11 a.m.

Baseball will head to Chico State for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon before concluding on Sunday at 11 a.m.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars went 3-2 at Stanislaus State’s Tournament of Champions last week, registering victories over Montana State Billings (9-4), Holy Names (4-2) and Dominican (5-4) while falling to Hawaii Hilo (2-1) and Saint Martin’s (8-4).
•Andrea Wood was named to the TOC All-Tournament Team hitting .538 after going 7-for-13 with two doubles, five RBIs and a run.
•Ronni Silas also registered seven hits and a .438 batting average while plating five times last weekend.
•Caitlin Vinyard collected two wins on the weekend while Ellie Smith finished with a 1.40 ERA over 10.0 innings and struck out eight batters.

SONOMA STATE SHOWDOWN •The Seawolves went 5-0 at the Tournament of Champions, outscoring their opponents 43-28.
•Prior to the tournament, SSU won its CCAA series 3-1 against Humboldt State.
•Sonoma State is sitting in third place in the CCAA standing, behind first-place UC San Diego (18-5) and second-place Chico State (16-6).
•The Seawolves are carrying the highest batting average (.328) and slugging percentage (.539) in the CCAA while tallying a conference-best 99 extra base hits (30 HR, 11 3B, 58 2B).

THE EWING FILE •Head coach Stef Ewing enters her first season in charge of the Cougar softball season as the fourth head coach in program history.
•Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
•She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM dropped three of its four games to Stanislaus State this past weekend.
•Griffin Teisher led the team with a .471 batting average as he went 8-for-17 with three runs, a double and three RBIs.
•Cabot Van Til leads the CCAA with a .404 batting average and 57 hits while tallying 23 multi-hit games this season.
•CSUSM continues to lead the league with a .311 batting average, 355 hits, nine triples, 193 RBIs and 493 total bases.
•Näshéa Diggs has reached base in 17 consecutive games – the third-longest streak by a Cougar this season.

ON THE ROAD AT CHICO STATE •Chico State lost three of its four games at UC San Diego this past weekend.
•The Wildcats are currently fifth in the CCAA standings.
•Chico is sixth in the conference standings for team batting average at .288.
•The Wildcats have the fifth-best team ERA in the league at 4.54.
•Dustin Miller leads Chico and is third in the CCAA with a .395 batting average.
•CSUSM is 2-8 in the all-time series against Chico and is 0-3 when playing in Chico.
•Last season, the Wildcats took three of their four games against the Cougars in San Marcos.

THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his third season at the helm of the Cougars baseball program.
•Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
•Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
•Guiliano is 51-86 (.372) as CSUSM’s head coach and is 226-319-1 (.415) for his entire head coaching career.
