This Week in Cougar Athletics: Feb. 5-11

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s golf teams open the 2018 spring season this week with the men competing in their home tournament and the women’s squad on the road. The men’s and women’s basketball teams are also in action this week, completing a three-game road trip on Tuesday at Pomona before hosting back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games on Friday and Saturday inside The Sports Center. The CSUSM softball team’s home and conference opener is on Friday and Saturday when the Cougars host San Francisco State.

CAL POLY POMONA •CSUSM is 1-2 all-time against the Broncos.
•The Cougars split their series last season against CPP, defeating the Broncos 67-64 in Pomona on Dec. 10 before falling 68-47 in The Sports Center on Jan. 12.
•The Broncos defeated Stanislaus State 77-57 last Thursday after dropping back-to-back games at Cal State Monterey Bay (50-49) and Cal State East Bay (76-67) the previous week.
•CPP’s defense is holding opponents to a conference best 58.1 points per game average while pulling down a CCAA-high 43.4 rebounds per game.
•Priscilla Brooks is leading the Broncos with 10.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO •CSUSM is 2-2 all-time against the Coyotes.
•Last season, the Cougars registered a 65-61 victory in San Bernardino on Jan. 21 after falling 69-66 in San Marcos on Nov. 30.
•The Coyotes dropped a 67-56 decision against Stanislaus State last Saturday.
•CSUSB is ranked fifth in the nation in blocked shots, averaging 5.6 per game. In the CCAA, Genaya Wilkinson is No. 2 with 1.8 blocks per game and Kaitlyn Parks is No. 4 with 1.4 per game.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-1 in CCAA play this past week.
•CSUSM recorded its second consecutive overtime win with a 62-58 victory at San Francisco State last Friday. The Cougars fell 75-69 at Sonoma State the following night.
•Senior Savannah Camp broke her own school record after registering 32 points against SSU.
•CSUSM ranks first in the CCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense (26.7), second in blocked shots per game (4.16) and defensive rebounds (29.4).

CAL POLY POMONA •CSUSM is 2-1 all-time against the Broncos including back-to-back wins.
•In the last meeting, Josh Spiers scored a game-high 30 points in an 88-76 Cougar win on Jan. 12, 2017 in San Marcos.
•CPP sits just a game ahead of the Cougars for the top spot in the CCAA standings. They have won four of their last five games and are coming off a 62-58 home loss to Stanislaus State.
•The Broncos rank first in the CCAA in multiple categories including scoring defense (61.0), field goal percent defense (37.4), 3-point field goal percentage (29.5) and steals (8.5).

CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO •CSUSM holds a 2-1 all-time record over the Coyotes.
•The Cougars split their series last season against CSUSB, defeating the Coyotes 70-55 in San Marcos on Nov. 30, 2016 before falling 106-100 in San Bernardino on Jan. 21, 2017.
•The Coyotes are currently riding a season-best four-game winning streak and are coming off a 76-55 home win over Stanislaus State on Feb. 3.
•Ajon Efferson leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game and the Coyotes rank first in the CCAA in assists per game (15.95).

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •CSUSM went 2-0 in CCAA play this past week.
•The Cougars have won three consecutive games for the fourth time this season and are coming off back-to-back come-from-behind road wins over San Francisco State (86-79) and Sonoma State (85-72).
•CSUSM continues to pace the CCAA in many team categories including scoring offense (81.8), scoring margin (10.3), field goal percentage (47.6), 3-point field goal percentage (41.7) and free throw percentage (75.6).
•Senior Ethan Alvano ranks first in the CCAA in scoring (21.8), assists (5.9), steals (2.6) and minutes (35.0) while classmate Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounds with 9.8 per game.
•CSUSM has recently jumped two spots to number five in the most recent 2017-18 D2SIDA West Region Men’s Basketball Media Poll.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE •CSUSM is 5-7 all-time against the Gators.
•The Cougars recorded back-to-back doubleheader splits at SF State last season, winning the middle two games of the series 2-1 and 3-2. CSUSM dropped the series opener 6-1 before falling in the 4-3 in the finale.
•SF State went 1-4 last weekend at the Desert Stinger hosted by MSU Billings. The Gators fell to Hawaii Hilo (15-1), University of Mary (7-6), Academy of Art (11-5) and Central Washington (9-1) before recording a victory over Eastern New Mexico (9-6).
•SF State was picked to finish ninth in the 2018 CCAA Softball preseason coaches poll.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went opened the 2018 season strong with a 3-2 victory over PacWest powerhouse California Baptist before falling 8-0 (6 inn.) in the night cap.
•Freshman Janaea Mason went 3-for-5 in the twinbill with a two-run homer and a double. Junior Caitlyn Vinyard collected the win after throwing a six-hit complete game.
•In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.
