This Week in Cougar Athletics: Jan. 8-14

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s basketball teams travel to the Bay Area this week to take on Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay. The CSUSM women’s track & field team begins its indoor season on Friday, competing in the Northern Arizona University’s Friday Night Challenge.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Thursday, Jan. 11 – 5:30 p.m.

CAL STATE EAST BAY •CSUSM is 1-4 all-time against the Pioneers.
•In overtime, CSUSM defeated CSUEB 74-71 in this season’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener on Nov. 30 in San Marcos. Senior Savannah Camp led the way offensively with 17 points.
•The Pioneers are currently riding a two-game win streak with back-to-back CCAA victories over Sonoma State (58-51) and Stanislaus State (73-71).
•CSUEB’s Morgan Greene ranks first in the CCAA in rebounds (12.2), second in field goal percentage (54.9) and ninth in points per game (14.0). Greene was named CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 1-7.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY •The Cougars are 3-2 all-time over the Otters.
•Last season, the Cougars defeated CSUMB on the road, 58-52 before an 86-63 blowout win at home. The 86 points scored were the highest scoring game for CSUSM all season.
•The Otters are coming off a 67-56 home win over Stanislaus State on Thursday, Jan. 4. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak.
•Aubri Smith leads CSUMB in points (14.7), assists (3.1) and minutes (28.5) per game. Courtney Keaton ranks sixth in the CCAA with 9.3 rebounds per game.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-1 in CCAA play this past week.
•CSUSM defeated Humboldt State 68-63 at home on Saturday, Jan. 6. Seniors Raegan Lillie (14) and Lupe Cruz (10) along with junior Juliet Jones (13) all scored in double-figures to lead the team offensively.
•Seniors Savannah Camp and Raegan Lillie are 1-2 on the team in scoring, averaging 16.0 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Lillie leads the team in minutes played per game (29.6).
•CSUSM ranks first in the CCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense (26.4), third in rebounding offense (41.4) and second in defensive rebounds (30.2) per game.

CAL STATE EAST BAY •CSUSM is unbeaten against the Pioneers, holding a 5-0 all-time record.
•Earlier this season, CSUSM defeated CSUEB 93-78 for the first CCAA win of the season. Four Cougars scored 15 points or more in the game with senior Brian Wright leading the way with 22 points, followed by Josh Spiers (21), Ethan Alvano (15) and Joe Boyd (15).
•The Pioneers have won back-to-back CCAA games with wins over Sonoma State (77-66) and Stanislaus State (72-63).
•CSUEB ranks second in the CCAA in offensive rebounds (12.2), rebounding defense (31.4) and rebounding margin (6.1).

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY •The Cougars hold a 3-1 all-time record over the Otters.
•Last season, CSUSM swept the two-game series with a 77-66 win in Seaside before recording a 77-64 victory at home.
•The Otters are currently on a five-game losing streak and are coming off an 83-57 home loss to Stanislaus State. CSUMB has not won since a 78-76 overtime upset over UC San Diego on Friday, Dec. 8.
•CSUMB ranks last in the CCAA in scoring defense (76.9), points margin (-6.7), free throw percentage (62.3) and turnover margin (-2.86). Jahvon Johnson leads the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-1 last week after taking down Chico State, 65-47 on Friday, Jan. 5 and falling to Humboldt State the following night, 81-78.
•Seniors Ethan Alvano (19.0) and Brian Wright (15.5) were the team’s top scorers in the two games.
•CSUSM ranks first in the CCAA in multiple categories including points per game (83.8), scoring margin (13.1), field goal percentage (49.1), 3-point field goal percentage (42.9), free throw percentage (75.2) and assists/turnover ratio (1.4).
•Senior Ethan Alvano leads the CCAA in scoring (20.3), assists (6.7), assist/turnover ratio (2.8), steals (2.6) and is second in minutes (33.5) per game. Senior Joe Boyd tops the CCAA in rebounds per game with 9.7 while classmate Josh Spiers is first in 3-point field goal percentage (44.6) and second in made 3-pointers per game (2.9).
