SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Women’s golf, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s track & field will all be in action this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.

Women’s golf will get the week started by hosting the CSUSM Women’s Fujikura Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Shawdowridge Golf Club in Vista. This tournament features eight teams in the top 25, including the top five in the GCAA coaches ranking.

Baseball will play a home-and-home series against No. 5 UC San Diego. The Cougars and Tritons will tangle at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. before finishing the series with a doubleheader in San Marcos at CSUSM Baseball Field on Sunday at noon.

Softball will host Stanislaus State in a four-game series at CSUSM Softball Field. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. while Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 11 a.m.

Men’s and women’s track & field will head to Point Loma for the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet on Saturday. Field events will get underway at 9:30 a.m. before running events begin at 11:30 a.m.

COUGAR UPDATE •The No. 16 Cougars won their fourth consecutive tournament last week, defeating second-place No. 17 Academy of Art by three strokes to finish with a 22-over 598 at Cal State East Bay’s Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout.
•Sophomore Claire Hogle was CSUSM’s top golfer with a 2-over 146 to tie for third place.
•Joining Hogle in the top 10 were freshman Breann Horn and junior Jaime Jacob who finished fifth and tied for ninth, respectively.

CSUSM FUJIKURA INVITATIONAL •The Cougars are the defending champion in their own spring tournament, finishing first in 2017 at Vista Valley Country Club in the rain-shorten tournament.
•The 2019 field consists of eight of the top 25 teams in the nation according to Golfstat.com, including No. 1 Dallas Baptist, No. 2 Nova Southeastern, No. 3 University of Indianapolis, No. 5 Barry and No. 7 Grand Valley State.
•No. 1 nationally-ranked individual golfer and 2018 NCAA individual runner-up Pilar Echeverria from U of Indy is competing in the field of 94 golfers.
•U of Indy is the defending NCAA National Champion with Dallas Baptist placing third, followed by Nova Southeastern and Barry.

THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018.
•Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM was 1-3 in its series against Sonoma State this past weekend.
•Cabot Van Til led the Cougars with seven hits, five runs, four stolen bases and a .438 batting average against the Seawolves.
•CSUSM continues to lead the conference in batting average (.324), hits (238), runs (145), sacrifice flies (14) and triples (7).
•Van Til leads the CCAA and ranks third nationally for hits (40) while tallying the 10th-most doubles with nine.
•Mike Lopez’s strikeout-to-walk ratio of 11.67 ranks 10th in Division II.

HOME-AND-HOME AGAINST NO. 5 UCSD •UCSD had no games this past week as its series at San Francisco State was cancelled.
•The last time the Tritons played, they swept Sonoma State in a four-game series on March 1-3.
•At 8-4 in CCAA play, UCSD is currently third in the conference standings.
•The Tritons have the best pitching staff in the league with a 2.54 earned run average.
•UCSD’s offense ranks 10th in the conference with a .258 team batting average.
•CSUSM is 3-11 in the all-time series against UCSD.
•The Tritons have won the past eight games against the Cougars with CSUSM’s last win occurring in 2016.
•CSUSM is 2-6 when playing in La Jolla as UCSD has won the past five games played there.
•The Cougars are 1-5 against the Tritons when playing at home and have lost the past four meetings.

THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his third season at the helm of the Cougars baseball program.
•Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
•Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
•Guiliano is 48-77 (.384) as CSUSM’s head coach and is 223-310-1 (.419) for his entire head coaching career.

PREVIOUS WEEK •After falling in both games in Friday’s doubleheader against San Francisco State last week, the Cougars bounced back with a 6-5 victory in the twin bill opener on Saturday before dropping a 8-7 12-inning game in the series finale.
•Kammy Fisher hit .467 against SF State with seven hits, two doubles and two runs.
•Brittney Scardina drove in a team-high six run on five hits including two doubles.
•Melody Forstie is ranked seventh in the CCAA with 24 hits.
•Ellie Smith has tallied 25 strikeouts, ranking her 10th in the CCAA.

STANISLAUS SHOWDOWN •The Warriors bounced back from a six-game losing streak with a series sweep over Cal State East Bay and before splitting a doubleheader last Friday with Academy of Art.
•Stan State opened their conference action being swept by Cal State Monterey Bay and dropping a 3-of-4 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
•The Warriors are carrying the lowest batting average (.260), slugging percentage (.359) and on base percentage (.307) in the CCAA.
•Stan State was picked to finish third in the 2019 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches’ Poll

THE EWING FILE •Head coach Stef Ewing enters her first season in charge of the Cougar softball season as the fourth head coach in program history.
•Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
•She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The men’s teams took fourth while the women’s team tied for fifth at UCSD’s San Diego Collegiate Challenge this past Saturday.
•Betsabe Reyes broke her own school record in the women’s hammer throw for the second week with a mark of 45.30 meters.
•Thomas Fadden posted the second-best hammer throw mark in program history and finished fourth at 49.94 meters. He improved upon his previous best by 7.02 meters.
•Ndoto Strong put up a season-best mark of 16.66 meters in the shot put and finished second. His NCAA Division II provisional mark currently ranks second in the nation.
•Strong then put up a season-best mark of 49.11 meters in the discus throw and finished third for the event. The mark currently ranks fourth in Division II.
•Clarissa Garcia won the 800-meter run with the fifth-fastest time in program history at 2:13.02.
•Kau’ilani Miki-Han tallied the second-best hammer throw mark in program history with a mark of 42.48 meters.
•Olivia Krog put up the second-best javelin throw mark in program history at 38.03 meters and finished sixth. She surpassed her previous mark by 0.32 meters.
•Jenna Hernandez’s mark of 31.95 meters in the javelin throw was the seventh-best in program history.

SATURDAY AT POINT LOMA •Saturday’s meet is scheduled to have a combined 38 men’s and women’s events take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
•Teams scheduled to take part include Azusa Pacific, Babson, Biola, Concordia Irvine, Navy, Point Loma (women’s only), San Diego (women’s only), San Diego State (pole vault only), The Master’s University, Tufts and UC San Diego.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his first season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track and field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
