This Week in Cougar Athletics: Sept. 24-30

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – There will be plenty of opportunities to catch Cal State San Marcos Athletics at home this week as the department will host five events Tuesday through Sunday. Volleyball will get the week started with a home match against Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the The Sports Center before concluding the week on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night. Men’s and women’s soccer will return to The Cage on Friday to host Humboldt State at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. They’ll end the weekend by hosting Sonoma State at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Women’s golf begins its 2018-19 season on Monday and Tuesday at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona, at the Golf Club of Estrella. After finishing up its first tournament on Saturday, men’s golf continues its tour of Washington by competing at the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Washington, at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

THIS SEASON •The Cougars finished 12th in the Saint Martin’s Invite last Saturday with Vrzich and McBrayer tying for 23rd with a 6-over 222.
•In the GCAA Coaches Poll, Cal State San Marcos received four points in the preseason poll on Aug. 24.
•Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•The men’s team qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season and will be looking to repeat this season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars fell in four sets at No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, who is now No. 25 in the AVCA National Top 25 Poll.
•With 22 blocks this past weekend, the Cougars now rank No. 3 in the CCAA with 2.12 blocks per set.

CSUDH UPDATE •The Toros are still looking for their first CCAA conference win of 2018.
•CSUDH was swept by both No. 22 Cal State L.A. and Cal State Monterey Bay this past weekend.
•The Toros are second in the CCAA in aces (1.91 per set) but second to last in kills per set (11.81).

SCOUTING CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY •The Otters two CCAA wins were both sweeps that came on the road against Humboldt State (Sept. 6) and CSUDH (Sept. 22)
•CSUMB also excels with aces, ranking third in the CCAA with 1.82 per set.
•CSUMB’s Samantha Brennan is hitting .336, ranking her tied for sixth in the conference.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings last season.

LOOKING AHEAD TO HUMBOLDT STATE •The Lumberjacks earned a 1-0 win at Cal State L.A. on Friday before taking a 2-0 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.
•Humboldt State has played on the road in seven of their first eight games this season.
•The Lumberjacks are currently tied for 10th in the CCAA standings while having the worst save percentage in the league at .756.

SONOMA STATE REPORT •The Seawolves are currently ranked No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll.
•Sonoma State tied 0-0 at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday before winning 1-0 at Cal State L.A. on Sunday.
•The Seawolves are 3-0-1 on the road this season.
•Sonoma State leads the league with 160 shots.
•In the CCAA standings, the Seawolves are currently tied with Chico State for the conference lead.

THE RENNEISEN FILE •Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his fifth year in charge of the women’s program and 13th overall at CSUSM
•Renneisen’s 2017 squad was the first CSUSM team sport to compete in the CCAA postseason.
•Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
•As the women’s head coach, Renneisen is 31-24-19 (.547) for his career with the Cougars.

PREVIOUS WEEK •For the first time as a member of the NCAA, the Cougars earned a spot in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll as they came in at No. 19
•CSUSM took its first loss of the season in overtime on Friday night at No. 23 UC San Diego after falling behind 2-0 and then scoring two goals within a minute of each other to send the game to extra time.

HUMBOLDT STATE UPDATE •The Lumberjacks took a 5-1 loss at Cal State L.A. on Friday before earning their second CCAA loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills by a score of 1-0 on Sunday.
•Humboldt State is currently 10th in the CCAA standings.

SCOUTING SONOMA STATE •The Seawolves are currently on a three-game losing streak after taking losses at Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-2) and at Cal State L.A. (1-0) on Friday and Sunday.
•Sonoma State’s lone wins came against Seattle Pacific and University of Mary earlier this month.
•The Seawolves are currently 11th in the CCAA standings.

THE PULVERS FILE •This season marks the 13th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
•He notched his 100th win as the men’s head coach on Oct. 7, 2016 in a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
•In 22 seasons as a collegiate head men’s soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 235-150-35 (.601) career record. He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women’s program.
•From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams.
