Cougars Notch First Road Win Over Concordia, 80-76

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team ended the Oxford Suites Classic with an 80-76 victory over tournament host Concordia (Ore.) on Saturday night at LCEF Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED •The Cougars trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half at 29-19.
•With 6:17 left to play in the first period, the Cougars began their 14-4 run to overtake the Cavaliers.
•Concordia tallied 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes while CSUSM had just eight.
•CSUSM went to the half with a 35-33 lead over Concordia behind Fuller’s 11 points.
•The Cougars were 13-of-33 (39.4%) from the field in the first half while the Cavaliers were 11-of-22.
•Both sides stayed within six points of each other to begin the second half until the Cougars took over for good at 57-56 with 10:48 remaining in the game.
•CSUSM took its largest lead of the game at 68-59 after going on an 11-3 run.
•The Cavaliers brought the Cougars’ lead down to one at 77-76 with 26 seconds remaining.
•After a good free throw by Sloan put the Cougars up 78-76 with 23 seconds left, Concordia missed a layup with 11 seconds left on the clock.
•The Cavaliers went to the foul line with less than a second remaining and missed both free throws to hand the Cougars the win.

FAST BREAKS •CSUSM improves to 3-2 for the season while Concordia drops to 1-3.
•Both teams were 15-of-30 from the field in the second half.
•Concordia shot 50 percent (26-of-52) for the game while CSUSM shot 28-of-63 (44.4%).
•The Cougars held the advantage in rebounds (37-36) and steals (10-3) while making fewer turnovers (20-12).
•Fourteen of the Cougars’ 37 boards were offensive rebounds.
•CSUSM has made at least 17 free throws in each of its last three games.
•The Cougars have tallied at least 10 steals in four of their five games.
•Fuller’s 24 points, eight made field goals and eight made free throws were the most by a Cougar this season.
•CSUSM’s victory was its first true road win this season.
•Concordia’s Hunter Sweet led the game with 29 points.
