Cal State San Marcos will hold a celebration honoring the 15th anniversary of the university’s Kellogg Library and the unveiling of a new library mural on Monday, Feb. 11.

The ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in the Kellogg Library Reading Room. It will include remarks by President Karen Haynes; Jennifer Fabbi and Char Booth, the dean and associate dean of the library, respectively; David Avalos, professor emeritus of the School of Arts; and muralist Jessica Sabogal.

The Kellogg Library opened in spring 2004, only a week after the arrival of Haynes, who’s now the longest-serving president in the California State University system and who’s retiring at the end of June. The five-story, $45 million library is the largest building on campus at 200,000 square feet.

The building is named for Jean “Janet” and W. Keith Kellogg II of Rancho Sante Fe. Mr. Kellogg is the namesake and grandson of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg and a retired packaging-company owner. The couple’s support helped jump-start the project after a failed bond proposition delayed construction of the library in 1994.

The mural, titled “In This Classroom There Are No Walls,” is located in the stairwell area and consists of portraits of six current and former CSUSM students of diverse backgrounds.

Sabogal is a first-generation Colombian American muralist based in the Bay Area. She is the first female artist commissioned to paint murals at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park.

The mural can be viewed by the public during the library’s normal business hours, but the event Monday is open only to invited guests and the media.
