CSUSM Posts Historic Win, Upsets No. 1 UC San Diego

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Behind yet another shutout in the net from sophomore Yesenia Betancourt, the Cal State San Marcos women’s soccer team recorded a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) upset over No. 1-nationally ranked UC San Diego at The Cage on Wednesday afternoon.

GOALS
CSUSM – 64′ Lauren Perry (Assist: Madyson Brown)

HOW IT HAPPENED •CSUSM keeper Yesenia Betancourt made an incredible leaping save in a one-on-one situation to deflect UCSD’s Mary Reilly’s shot in the 34th minute.
•Off Brown’s corner kick from the right, Perry drilled the ball to the low left corner of the net to put CSUSM up 1-0.

QUICK KICKS •This marks CSUSM’s first win over a top-ranked team in its NCAA Division II history.
•The Cougars (5-4-1, 4-1 CCAA) handed UCSD (9-1-1, 4-1) its first loss of the season.
•The victory over UCSD is CSUSM’s first in program history after eight previous attempts.
•The Tritons outshot the Cougars, 14-8.
•Perry collected her second goal of the season in the contest.
