This Week in Cougar Athletics: March 4-10

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The spring semester rolls on for Cal State San Marcos Athletics as men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, softball, baseball and men’s and women’s track & field all compete this week.

On Monday and Tuesday, men’s golf will head down to the Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee for UCSD’s SoCal Intercollegiate while women’s golf will head up to Pleasanton for the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.

After concluding its regular season this past Saturday, women’s basketball will host Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in The Sports Center.

Softball will head to San Francisco State for a four-game series at SFSU Softball Stadium. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at noon while Saturday’s will get underway at 11 a.m.

Baseball will also be in Northern California as it pays Sonoma State a visit. The four-game series will get underway on Friday at 2 p.m. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. before wrapping up on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Men’s and women’s track and field will split up on Saturday as they compete at UCSD’s San Diego Collegiate Open in La Jolla and Occidental College’s Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic in Los Angeles. The action in Los Angeles is set to begin at 9 a.m. while the meet in La Jolla will start at 11 a.m.

LAST OUTING •CSUSM shot a program-record 9-under par 279 in the final round to win the Mikuni Sushi Shootout by 29 strokes
•This was CSUSM’s third consecutive and fourth team title of the season.
•Breann Horn carded a 4-under 68 in the final round, jumping from 10th place to win by one stroke.

TIM TIERNEY PIONEER SHOOTOUT •The Cougars placed third in last year’s Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout.
•Jacob was the individual medalist after finishing the tournament at 3-over 147.
•Magallon shot a 9-over 153 (78-75) tying for seventh.
•CSUSM had the lowest par 3 score (+3) and recorded 55 pars, most of the 17-team field.

LAST OUTING •Junior Ryan Bisharat captured his first individual medalist crown after carding an 8-under 208 at the CSUSB Coyote Classic.
•As a team, CSUSM finished third with a 16-over 880, behind Colorado School of Mines (875) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (878).
•Bisharat’s opening round of 65 put him alongside Kyle Anderson (06-07) and Joe Rathburn (03-04) with the second-lowest round in program history.

UCSD SOCAL INTERCOLLEGIATE •The Cougars placed fourth in last year’s SoCal Intercollegiate after carding their lowest round of the tournament at 291 to finish with a 23-over 887.
•Dominican is the defending champion after turning in a 7-over 871, defeating runner-up Dixie State (882) by 11 strokes.
•Jordan McBrayer was CSUSM’s top golfer, tying for fourth with a even-par 216.

THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018.
•Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM earned the No. 4 seed in the CCAA Tournament with a 14-8 conference record.
•The Cougars completed a series sweep over Cal State East Bay with a 61-48 victory last Thursday before recording a 67-52 win against Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day on Saturday.
•Jon’Nae Vermillion remains in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding in the CCAA, ranking ninth with 13.4 points per game and 10th with 8.2 rebounds per game.
•Emma Forel is 10th in scoring after averaging 13.3 points per game.
•CSUSM remains in second place behind UC San Diego (43.2) in the CCAA in field-goal percentage with a 42.7 average.
•The Cougars concluded the regular season on a six-game winning streak.

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS SHOWDOWN •CSUDH enters the CCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed after winning the tie-breaker with Cal State East Bay.
•The Cougars got revenge on CSUDH on Feb. 16, defeating the Toros 76-64 after falling to them 88-82 at the Torodome on New Year’s Eve.
•CSUSM is 2-7 against the Toros with both wins coming in the Cougars’ first and most recent match-ups.
•Nautica Morrow leads the CCAA and ranks eighth in the nation with a 3.1 steals per game average.
•CSUDH is the CCAA rebounding leader, averaging 49.2 per game.

THE JIMENEZ FILE •Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her fourth season in charge of the Cougar women’s basketball team, a program that is only in its eighth season of existence.
•In her eleven seasons coaching in the CCAA, Jimenez has compiled a 166-128 (.565) coaching record. She spent two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars lost both ends in Friday’s doubleheader by scores of 11-3 and 3-2 against No. 8 Chico State.
•Saturday’s double-header was cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.
•Brittney Scardina hit .750 (3-for-4) on Friday against Chico State with a RBI and a double.
•Ronni Silas boasts a .581 on-base percentage, landing her second in the CCAA statistics.

A GLANCE AT THE GATORS •The Gators defeated No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino in Friday’s double-header (3-1, 7-3) and fell in Saturday’s games (1-5, 8-9).
•San Francisco is currently No. 1 in the CCAA for batting with a .333 average.
•Brylynn Vellejos owns a batting average of .500, ranking her second in the CCAA with teammate Andrea Hidlan in third with a batting average of .478.
•SFSU is sixth in the CCAA standings.

THE EWING FILE •Head coach Stef Ewing enters her first season in charge of the Cougar softball season as the fourth head coach in program history.
•Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
•She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM suffered a setback as it was swept in a four-game series against San Francisco State at CSUSM Baseball Field.
•Cabot Van Til led the Cougars with nine hits, five runs, three doubles and .750 slugging percentage while Austin Ott led the team with five RBIs and a home run.
•CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA offensively with a .336 team batting average, 127 runs, 202 hits, seven triples, 115 RBIs, 283 total bases and a .470 slugging percentage.
•Van Til’s .434 batting average ranks second in the conference while his 33 hits and eight doubles lead the way.

COUGARS AT SONOMA STATE •The Seawolves were swept in their four-game at UC San Diego over the weekend.

•The Seawolves are hitting dead last in the CCAA rankings with a team batting average of .213.
•SSU’s pitchers have a team ERA of 5.38 – eighth in the CCAA.
•The Cougars and Seawolves are tied at 5-5 in the all-time series.
•CSUSM has never won a game at SSU as they stand at 0-3.
•Last season, the Cougars and Seawolves split the season series at two games each in San Marcos.

THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his third season at the helm of the Cougars baseball program.
•Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
•Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
•Guiliano is 47-74 (.388) as CSUSM’s head coach and is 222-307-1 (.420) for his entire head coaching career.

PREVIOUS WEEK •At the RCC Invitational, CSUSM’s men took fourth while the women’s squad took fifth.
•Betsabe Reyes broke her own CSUSM record in the women’s hammer throw with a second-place mark of 42.99 meters.
•Clarissa Garcia won the women’s 800 with a time of 2:16.61.
•Ndoto Strong won his second consecutive men’s shot put event with a mark of 16.06 meters.
•Antonio Riggins took second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.56 meters – his best non-wind-aided mark to date.
•Kyle Rossman won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:01.13.

SPLIT WEEKEND AT UCSD AND OCCIDENTAL •The Cougars will split up this weekend by competing at UCSD’s San Diego Collegiate Challenge and at Occidental College’s Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic on Saturday.
•At the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, the Cougars will go up against UCSD, Cal State Northridge, Navy and the women’s teams from San Diego State and Point Loma.
•Teams for the Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic have yet to be announced.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his first season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track and field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
