This Week in Cougar Athletics: Oct. 1-7

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball and soccer teams will be tested this week at home, hosting five nationally-ranked teams in five days. The Cougar volleyball squad takes on No. 14 Cal State L.A. on Tuesday before facing No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams welcome UC San Diego on Wednesday with the Triton women ranked No. 1 in the nation and the Triton men No. 13. The CSUSM men’s and women’s cross country teams head to Chicago to compete in the Lewis Conference Cross-over on Saturday morning.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars started the week with a sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) last Tuesday in The Sports Center.
•CSUSM dropped three consecutive sets at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
•For the week, senior Faith Fortuné hit .423 with 13 kills on 26 attempts and made only two errors.

CSULA UPDATE •The Golden Eagles were swept by CSUSB last Friday before rebounding with a sweep at CPP on Saturday.
•CSULA ranks third in kills per set (13.67) while holding opponents to a CCAA-low 9.81 average.
•The Golden Eagles rank second in the CCAA South Division and second overall among conference schools.

SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA •The Broncos began a five-game road series last week, being swept by both CSUSB and CSULA with a four-set win over Cal State Dominguez Hills sandwiched in-between.
•CSUSM last faced CPP on Oct. 22 with the Broncos coming out on top in four sets.
•CPP leads the CCAA in digs per set (17.14) and ranks second in kills per set (14.09).
•With the two losses last week, the Broncos dropped down to third in the CCAA South Division standings.

CSUSB BREAKDOWN •The Coyotes are off to another strong start this season with their lone loss of the year coming from five-set thriller against Western Washington on Aug. 30 at the D2 West Region Showcase.
•The Cougars faced then-No. 5 CSUSB on Sept. 21 in San Bernardino, taking one of four sets from the Coyotes.
•As a team, CSUSB is nationally ranked in the top 15 in three stat categories. ◦No. 5 in hitting percentage (.277)
◦No. 6 in kills per set (14.56)
◦No. 11 in assists per set (13.46)

•CSUSB enters the week as the only team undefeated in the CCAA at 9-0.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings last season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars moved to 3-1 in CCAA play after a 2-0 win over Humboldt State and a 1-0 loss to No. 24 Sonoma State at home this past weekend.
•Yesenia Betancourt notched 13 saves for the weekend and allowed just one goal while recording her third shutout of the year.
•Seven different Cougars have scored one goal this season.

WE MEET AGAIN •The Tritons are No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll.
•UCSD defeated No. 24 Sonoma State 2-1 on Friday before earning a 3-1 victory over Humboldt State on Sunday.
•This will be the first time as a member of the NCAA that the Cougars have faced a No. 1 team.
•The then-No. 2 Tritons defeated the Cougars 2-0 in a non-conference game in La Jolla on Sept. 22.
•UCSD is 9-0-1 for the season and sits in third place in the CCAA standings with 12 points at 4-0.

NORTH TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE •The Gators took a 2-1 loss to Cal State L.A. before posting a 1-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills this past weekend.
•SFSU is 5-4-1 on the season and is tied for fourth in the CCAA standings with 10 points at 3-2-1.

THE RENNEISEN FILE •Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his fifth year in charge of the women’s program and 13th overall at CSUSM
•Renneisen’s 2017 squad was the first CSUSM team sport to compete in the CCAA postseason.
•Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
•As the women’s head coach, Renneisen is 32-25-19 (.546) for his career with the Cougars.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM went 0-1-1 this past weekend after falling 1-0 to Humboldt State on Friday and tying 1-1 with Sonoma State on Sunday.
•David Martin scored the Cougars’ lone goal of the weekend to bring his team-leading season total up to four.

ANOTHER CLOSE GAME AGAINST UCSD? •CSUSM and UC San Diego each put on a fantastic game in non-conference action on Sept. 21 in La Jolla as the Tritons squeaked out a 3-2 win in overtime after the Cougars tied the game with two goals within a minute of each other late in regulation.
•UCSD is No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll with a 9-0-1 record.
•The Tritons are 3-0-1 in CCAA play and sit in third with 10 points.
•UCSD defeated Sonoma State 2-0 on Friday before defeating Humboldt State 3-1 on Sunday.

LOOKING AHEAD TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE •With eight points, the Gators are seventh in the CCAA standings at 2-2-2 and have a 5-2-3 overall record.
•SFSU tied 0-0 with Cal State L.A. on Friday before chalking up a 3-0 victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.

THE PULVERS FILE •This season marks the 13th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
•He notched his 100th win as the men’s head coach on Oct. 7, 2016 in a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
•In 22 seasons as a collegiate head men’s soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 235-151-36 (.600) career record. He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women’s program.
•From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams.

PREVIOUS RACE •The CSUSM women’s team won the CSUSB Coyote Challenge by six points on Sept. 22 with senior Shelby Eberwein pacing the Cougars with a fourth place finish.
•Eberwein earned CCAA Runner of the Week honors for Sept. 17-23 after finishing fourth out of 212 runners in a time of 17:52.8 in the 5k race.
•On the men’s side, CSUSM earned runner-up honors at the CSUSB Coyote Challenge, just nine points behind fellow CCAA member Cal Poly Pomona. Senior Steven Terris was CSUSM’s top runner, finishing in a time of 25:15.9 for third place.

UPCOMING RACE •This is the first time CSUSM has raced on the campus of Lewis University.
•Both the men and women are ranked No. 7 in the West Region by USTFCCA on Sept. 25.
