Traffic pattern changes coming to Nordahl Road beginning Feb. 19

In efforts to keep motorists moving smoothly through San Marcos, motorists can expect to experience a new traffic pattern on southbound Nordahl Road at Center Drive beginning Tuesday. Feb. 19.

The new change will convert the southbound number two lane into an exclusive right-hand turn only lane onto Center Drive. This permanent improvement will accommodate the current heavy right-hand turn traffic demands on southbound Nordahl Road and while also improving the intersection’s traffic operations.

Currently, there are two designated southbound lanes on Nordahl Road and the number two lane (the lane closest to the right-hand side curb) is currently configured as a combined lane for through and right-hand turn traffic movements.

Roadway signage and striping will be in place to provide advance warning to motorists traveling southbound on Nordahl Road. Advance warning signs such as, “THRU TRAFFIC MERGE LEFT,” and “RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT,” as well as right-turn only pavement arrows and a new 5-foot bike lane will be installed as part of the lane assignment change.

With these improvements approved by the City’s Traffic Commission during a regularly scheduled meeting in October 2018, city staff will continue to monitor and evaluate the traffic conditions on Nordahl Road once the new traffic pattern change is implemented.
